Electrical Level 4 - Systems Architecture & Innovation
High-level electrical system design and technical leadership
Table of content
Learning Objective
Lead robot-level electrical architecture development including power system optimization and control system integration, design redundancy into critical systems (e.g. dual-powering the radio), pioneer innovative electrical solutions through advanced system design and custom electronics development, implement comprehensive testing and validation frameworks, and mentor future electrical designers while building sustainable practices. This level represents a proven, multi-season record of excellence in electrical design, and is expected to take several seasons to accumulate the prerequisites and requirements it involves.
Prerequisites
- Electrical Level 3 - Advanced Control Systems
- Project Management Level 2 - Team Coordination
- Programming Level 3 - Advanced Systems Integration
Primary Resources
- WPILib: Wiring Best Practices
- FIRST Excellence in Engineering Award Workbook
- Littleton Robotics (6328): All Things Electrical and Wiring
- Citrus Circuits (1678) LYNK Electrical lessons
Tasks
-
System Architecture
- Design a complete electrical architecture for the season's robot
- Optimize power distribution systems
- Develop system redundancy plans for critical components (e.g. dual-powering the radio)
- Lead architecture design reviews
-
Innovation Development
- Research cutting-edge electrical solutions used by other teams and industry
- Design a custom electrical system or circuit for a specific need
- Prototype an innovative concept
- Validate a new technology before committing it to the competition robot

Testing & Validation
- Create comprehensive test plans for electrical subsystems
- Develop validation procedures to confirm a design meets its requirements
- Implement automated or repeatable testing where practical
- Document system performance data across a season
-
Leadership & Mentoring
- Mentor electrical team members through their own Level 1-3 progression
- Document best practices for future teams
- Lead technical decision-making for the electrical subteam
- Build a sustainable, documented electrical program
Level 4 Completion Requirements
- Lead the electrical architecture for a season's robot, reviewed and signed off by a mentor
- Implement at least one innovative electrical solution validated through testing
- Demonstrate sustained mentorship of at least one junior electrical team member through their own progression
- Create lasting documentation and best-practices materials for future teams
